Building permits are an indicator of how many new homes will be built in the near future and where they will be located. In the past 5 years, an average of 1,200 new homes have been permitted per year, well below a high of 3,151 units in 2006. The percentage of new homes in cities and urban areas has been increasing.
The majority of new homes permitted in Thurston County are single-family homes. Multifamily homes make up about a third of the total urban housing stock while roughly a quarter of rural dwellings are manufactured or mobile homes.
