Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan for the Thurston Region
In 2000, the Federal Government put into place the Disaster Mitigation Act. This established a requirement that for all disasters declared on or after November 1, 2004 local and tribal applicants for sub-grants for disaster mitigation funds must have an approved local mitigation plan.
Last year, Thurston County received a grant to fund this work and have contracted with TRPC to conduct the planning process and write the plan. The plan has been prepared through a cooperative effort by local governmental entities and contains proposals to mitigate the region's vulnerabilities to the effects of hazards such as storms, landslides, earthquakes or flooding. These proposed mitigation initiatives range from placing flood gauges in rivers to replacing a masonry block fire station which was damaged in the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.
The mitigation initiatives have been prioritized for implementation and these projects will be implemented by the participating organizations as the resources become available. The issuance of the plan also gives the participating entities the opportunity to be eligible in the future for state and federal mitigation-related grant funding.
