Methodology and Applications

Monitoring the effects of urbanization is often hindered by the lack of comprehensive land cover information. In response to this long-standing problem, Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC) developed a detailed Digital Land Cover Data Layer for the entire land area of Thurston County based on satellite data acquired in the summer of 2000.
Land cover indicators are an important tool to prioritize critical area and watershed planning efforts, in light of development pressures in this region.
