UNDERSTANDING PUBLIC VISION AND MARKETPLACE REALITIES IN THE THURSTON REGION

March 2005
The population of Thurston County is growing. So is its job base. This means demand for transportation is also growing. Increased congestion is inevitable. But growth can also be good for transportation. How? Growth can mean better urban form supporting efficient transit alternatives, safer streets for walking and biking, and shorter travel distances for all modes of travel. Where future growth occurs and the shape it takes has direct bearing on the choices and opportunities this region faces.
This relationship between growth and transportation makes planning for the region’s future an important – but difficult – responsibility. This report summarizes recent efforts to understand where growth pressures and adopted visions intersect – and where they don’t. The intent is to reap the positive community benefits of growth while minimizing its negative impacts.
