Building permits are an indicator of how many new homes will be built in the near future and where they will be located. About 1,400 new homes were permitted in 2020, up slightly from 2019.
The percentage of new homes in cities and urban areas continues to be higher than those permitted in unincorporated areas. Single-family dwellings made up 49% of the homes permitted in 2020 while only 45% of new homes were multifamily units such as apartments. The remaining 6% were manufactured homes.
