Supporting Strategies

BANNER_CTR_SupportingStrategies

There are a variety of strategies that can be implemented at a worksite to help employees reduce drive alone commute trips.

Parking Management

Regulating use of parking is one of the more effective CTR methods. Strategies include pricing parking and/or reserving the most convenient parking spaces for carpoolers and other rideshare vehicles.

Incentives and Subsidies

Incentives and subsidies might include paying for a portion of an employee's bus pass or vanpool fee, or rewarding alternative commuters with prizes, gifts, or a regular financial incentive. These are successful strategies for maintaining on-going participation in a program.

On-site amenities

Amenities that reduce the need to have a car at work are simple but important, and can benefit the entire workforce. These amenities might include a cafeteria or food delivery service, direct payroll deposit, an ATM, and dry cleaning delivery services.

Facilities

Secure bicycle parking, in the form of covered racks or bike lockers are critical for promoting bicycling. Additionally showers and lockers can make bicycle commuting more convenient.

Ridematching

Helping employees find a carpool partner is most successful when done by an ETC or a regional ridematch service, like RideshareOnline.com.

Fleet vehicles

Access to a fleet vehicle eliminates the need to use a personal car for work purposes.

Emergency Ride Home

Emergency Ride Home programs provide a free ride home to employees who arrived at work by a method other than driving alone, but must return home unexpectedly. Many employers, including state agencies, allow the use of fleet vehicles for this purpose.

Intercity Transit vanpool riders qualify for a vanpool emergency ride home program. Contact an Intercity Transit Vanpool Coordinator for more information.

SAFErideState Agency Free Emergency Ride (SAFE Ride) Home Program

All state employees who work in Thurston County are eligible for the SAFE Ride program—certain conditions apply.

The SAFE Ride program is an “insurance” program that provides employees a ride home in cases of emergencies on any day the employee commuted to work other than by driving alone. Alternate commute modes include transit, vanpools, carpools, biking or walking.
