Between 2016 and 2017, overall energy consumption by Puget Sound Energy (PSE) customers in Thurston County increased by 15.3%. Electricity consumption increased by 6.2% while natural gas consumption increased by 31.4%.
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) typically reports electricity use in kilowatt-hours while natural gas use is reported in therms. These units both convert into megajoules (MJ), which are used in the chart above to compare energy sources used by PSE's customers. The following conversion rates apply:
1 therm = 105.48 MJ
1 kilowatt-hour = 3.6 MJ
Sustainable Thurston Report Card
The Sustainable Thurston Report Card uses electricity and natural gas consumption to measure how well the Thurston region is doing at reducing energy consumption. No targets have been established for energy consumption.
The Sustainable Thurston Report Card also uses greenhouse gas emissions to measure how well we are doing at moving towards carbon neutrality. The benchmark includes three targets for doing so: reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 25% below 1990 levels by 2020 and 45% below 1990 levels by 2035.
