Transportation Modeler/Associate Transportation Planner

Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC) is seeking a collaborative, and versatile transportation modeler, or a transportation planner with a strong interest in transportation modeling, to join our well-regarded team. ABOUT TRPC

TRPC is a Regional Transportation Planning Organization, council of governments, and Metropolitan Planning Organization governed by a 22-member intergovernmental board. The agency is non-regulatory with a mission to “provide visionary leadership on regional plans, policies, and issues.”

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in transportation modeling or experience in transportation planning with an aptitude and interest in transportation modeling. Candidates without transportation modeling experience but with an interest in modeling are encouraged to apply, as on the job training will be provided.
  • Experience in data analysis, GIS, or other technical skills.
  • Familiarity with planning and planning principals.
  • Familiarity with programming, ideally in Python.
  • A strong desire to serve the public interest.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Three years of experience in the fields of transportation planning or modeling.
  • A bachelor’s degree in urban or regional planning or transportation modeling, or a related field such as geography, mathematics, computer science, or environmental studies. A master’s degree is desirable.
  • Any demonstrated combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted.

THE POSITION

The Modeler/Planner will work as part of a three-person modeling team supporting regional transportation planning activities in the GIS and Data division of the agency. This is a specialist position concentrating on travel demand forecasting, data analysis, and interpretation, with opportunities for GIS and planning. The regional model platform is EMME/2 and the dynamic traffic assignment model platform is Dynameq. The modeler/planner will also collaborate with local partners using SYNCHRO and other modeling platforms.

A successful candidate could expect to:
  • Work as part of the modeling team to learn how to run and update the transportation models.
  • Support regional transportation tasks including, but not limited to, traffic count collection coordination, corridor studies, and multimodal evaluation of land use scenario impacts on the region’s transportation system.
  • Analyze complex issues and present results in concise reports and presentations.
  • Write scripts within the transportation model platform to automate tasks.
  • Develop status reports for project, program, and grant reporting.
  • Organize data related to transportation alternatives and scenarios.
  • Respond to public inquiries with transportation-related data and information.
  • Prepare written reports and model documentation for other professionals, policymakers and lay audiences.
  • Prepare and present oral and visual reports to Council, committees, community groups, and private organizations.

Highly qualified candidates will have knowledge of:

  • Project management principles and practices.

  • Transportation modeling and related statistical software.

  • General planning concepts and processes.

  • Computer programming, such as Python.

  • Microsoft Office software for document, spreadsheet, and presentation preparation.


And the ability to:

  • Problem solve and provide holistic solutions.

  • Organize and keep track of complex data sets.

  • Resolve conflict in an open and inclusive manner.

  • Communicate technical information effectively, either orally or in writing.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other agencies and the public.

  • Show initiative with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

COMPENSATION


TRPC provides generous annual leave and employer-paid medical and dental coverage for its employees. The agency is a member of the Washington State Public Employees Retirement System. TRPC provides employer-paid transit passes and supports commute trip reduction measures such as telework, compressed work weeks, and flexible schedules.

Associate Transportation Planner: Hiring range for the position is $5,468 – $6,829 per month depending on qualifications.

Transportation Modeler: Hiring range for the position is $5,888 – $7,354 per month depending on qualifications.

The Council typically approves an annual cost-of-living increase.
